SAVE THE KOALA

The Friendly Marsupials

You probably know that the koala is an iconic Australian animal. Its cute features and somewhat lazy nature mean everyone loves this creature. However, the 60-plus years of habitat destruction, disease, and climate change mean there are fewer koalas now than ever before. We need to ensure these friendly marsupials don’t disappear altogether.

The koala is a small, tree-dwelling marsupial found in Australia. It only weighs around 2 kilos (4.5 pounds) and has a very small head, no tails, and white fur on its back. Koalas spend nearly all their life within trees, living off eucalyptus leaves that they strip from trees with their long claws. The koala will return to the same tree to roost each night but when they are hungry they will venture out during daylight hours to eat eucalyptus leaves in preference to other foods. They also have sharp claws that can cut through soft wood easier than through hard casuarina gum or mulga rasp trees as well as eating bark from trees

In years past, koalas have been hunted for their furs and in recent years even their droppings have been used as a cosmetic skin treatment. However, it is their habitat that they are most threatened by, as they rely on gum leaves to survive – but unfortunately, these trees are being cleared at a rapid rate. It is crucial that we save the remaining gum trees before any more koalas disappear.

Koalas are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list, which means that their numbers are decreasing and they’re in danger of being extinct.
